PhD Upgrade Presentation
Sue Wilks, May 2002

The outcomes of any performative event cannot be analysed until after the event itself has taken place. The context for this particular performative event was my PhD Upgrade Presentation, the purpose of which is to assess the student (regarding entry into year two of the programme of study). The immediate feelings that I have in response to my memory recordings of this event are a combination of shame (with regards to 'what I did') and also deep respect (in relation to the knowledge that I gained from my experiences).

There are two main (image) links shown below. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE LINK TO THE LEFT IS FOLLOWED FIRST IF THE USER IS SEEKING CONTINUITY. This link leads to the the script that I presented at my examination together with the (transcribed) feedback/responses that I received from those present.

The (image) link to the right leads to an edited version of the 10,000 word upgrade text that I submitted as part of my upgrade examination, titled An Account of What I Did and Why I Did I
t , or, The Outcomes of Pure Research. This paper contains my reflections upon my upgrade presentation.

The only material residue from my Upgrade Presentation is this audio cassette recording, taken from a video recording that I made of the audience (for feedback purposes). I smashed the video cassette up following my presentation at the audience's request...
